FE Sounding Board

In the past, the work of the FE zone has been mainly led by a handful of successful FE-related motions passed at conference, and the VP-FE at the time making reactive decisions based on their own politics and advice of staff and talks with other NEC. This is not the best way for the FE zone to actively involve its membership in the formulation of ongoing work and planning, both internal and external.

To try and combat this, the FE zone and its convenor, Beth Walker, Vice President (Further Education) will be launching a new “FE sounding board”.

The FE sounding board will meet 3-4 times a year to discuss the work of the FE Zone- its campaigns, its programmes of work and NUS’ relationship with stakeholders in the Further Education sector. Ideas and plans within the FE Zone’s scheme of work will be presented, and the sounding board will be asked to give feedback on. The sounding board will also be asked as a collective to discuss “key-issues” which are facing the sector, and how they will impact upon their membership as well as themselves as officers.

As well as acting as a sounding-board, the group will be expected to obtain info prior to meetings- for example collecting info from local SU’s, and also disseminating information off the back of SU’s back onto the ground.

The sounding-board will comprise of some 8-10 Further Education officers, from across the country in both full-time and part-time officer positions.

Training will be given to all officers. Travel costs and food will be covered.

To register your interest in becoming a member of the new “ FE Sounding Board”, or would like just discuss it further, please contact Beth Walker

The closing deadline to register interest is Monday 11th August 2008.
