Uniting against fascism

I was proud to march on the Unite Against Fascism demonstration a few weeks ago and proud to see our President, Wes Streeting, and Black Students Officer Bellavia Ribiero-Addy addressing thousands of people in Trafalgar Square telling them of NUS’ and students' unions commitment not to tolerate fascists or racists in our community.

Thousands turned out to stand against fascism, against racism and against the BNP. Students joined trade unionists, community groups and musicians for Love Music Hate Racism.

The demo was not just about Londoners but the whole country in standing up against the growing threat of the BNP. The growth in their vote is a real concern not only for students but also wider society. Nationally within your towns and cities, the BNP are gaining more votes than ever before.

Students in London find themselves with a BNP representative on the Greater London Authority. Staffordshire Students' Union (which had representatives, in large numbers, on the demo - good work guys) are faced with a large number of BNP councillors and a real threat that the BNP may win the mayorship of Stoke.

The BNP is beginning to target our campuses to recruit activists and we must stand opposed to them or any other fascist groups presence

So what can your union do?

Be aware of what is happening locally
There are a number of groups that coordinate local campaigns against the BNP and National Front, so get in contact with them and see what support you can give and receive. www.uaf.org.uk

Hold a Love Music Hate Racism night
Through music, unions can promote the anti-racism message and reach out to students who may not have engaged before. PAs can come and perform check out the Love Music, Hate Racism site for more details.

Make sure your union has a ‘no platform’ policy
NUS is proud of its no platform policy. The stance means we do not share a platform with racists or fascists. For your union, it means you can prevent speakers from groups such as the BNP pedalling their racist hate on your campuses and in your buildings. NUS' Anti-Racism, Anti-Fascism Campaign will be working alongside you this year to help implement and re-affirm your no platform policies.

A united student movement standing against racism and fascism is essential and we need you to work alongside us to ensure our campuses are safe places for all students

Please do get in touch with our Anti-Racism, Anti-Fascism co-convenors Joel Braunold and Bellavia Ribiero-Addy for more info on the upcoming year.

Cheers,
